Our Story

Joseph Ngaruiya

Founder & CEO

Joseph Ngaruiya was born and raised in Nairobi, Kenya, where he lived until the age of 16. In December 2001, he immigrated to the United States with his mother, Salome, settling in Lowell, Massachusetts. The transition from a Third-World to a First-World country was a profound culture shock. He recalls feeling overwhelmed at Lowell High School, which had a student population nearly ten times larger than what he was used to in Nairobi.

His mother, a former banker in Kenya, began working as a certified nursing assistant—like many immigrants, she persevered through long hours and hard work to support her family. While staying with his uncle, two more family members joined them, and the five lived together in a modest two-bedroom apartment in Lowell.

Joseph completed high school and went on to earn a degree in nursing. Despite his success in the healthcare field, he maintained a strong passion for business. In 2006, at the age of 21, he moved to Springfield, Massachusetts, to pursue opportunities in real estate. He successfully built his first property, but when the housing market collapsed, he returned to nursing to regain financial stability.

In 2011, Joseph saw an opportunity to serve his community through the home healthcare industry. Lacking the necessary capital to invest, he turned to his family for support. His aunt in Kenya sold a piece of land to provide him with a loan. Combined with his savings, this enabled him to invest in a franchised home care business, which he operated successfully in Western Massachusetts with the help of his family and key partners.

Building on this momentum, Joseph launched his own company, A Better Life Homecare LLC, in January 2014. The company grew rapidly, earning him recognition in 2019 with the Barry M. Portnoy Immigrant Entrepreneur Award from the Immigrant Learning Center in Boston. He was one of 38 nominees from 26 countries, honored for founding impactful businesses in Massachusetts. Today, A Better Life Homecare has expanded into multiple states, with a goal of operating in 10 states by the end of 2027.

In 2023, Joseph founded JN Family Office, a strategic entity managing his diverse ventures, including healthcare companies, a growing real estate portfolio in Florida, Massachusetts, and Kenya, and a 357-acre farm in Kenya. Additionally he founded Niles Capital, his private investment firm, that engages in the buying and selling of public securities.

Joseph remains grateful for the opportunities he has had since arriving in the U.S. and attributes his success to perseverance, preparation, and support from his family. As he often says, “Success is where preparation meets opportunity.”
